Fire Safety: Simple Steps That Can Save Lives

2 min read

A fire can happen when you least expect it. Whether it starts in a kitchen, office, garage, or bedroom, knowing what to do in the first few moments can make a significant difference.

The good news? Fire safety starts with a few simple habits and a little preparation.

🔥 Know Your Escape Plan

Every home and workplace should have a fire escape plan. Identify at least two ways out of each commonly occupied area when possible, and make sure exits are accessible and not blocked.

For families, practice the escape plan with everyone—including children. Make sure everyone knows where to meet outside so you can quickly determine whether everyone made it out safely.

Remember: Get out and stay out. Never go back inside a burning building.

🚨 Make Sure Your Smoke Alarms Work

Smoke alarms provide an early warning that can give you valuable time to escape.

Test your smoke alarms regularly and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for battery replacement and alarm replacement. Smoke alarms should be located where they can effectively alert occupants to a fire.

If an alarm sounds, take it seriously and get outside.

🍳 Practice Kitchen Safety

Cooking is one of the most common causes of home fires. Never leave cooking unattended, especially when frying, grilling, or using high heat.

Keep towels, paper products, curtains, and other combustible materials away from cooking surfaces.

If a small grease fire occurs, never throw water on it. If it is safe to do so, turn off the heat and carefully cover the pan with a lid. If the fire continues or you are unsure what to do, evacuate and call 911.

🧯 Know How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

A fire extinguisher can be useful for a small, contained fire, but it should never put you at greater risk.

Before attempting to use one, make sure you have a clear escape route behind you and that the fire is small and manageable. If the fire is spreading, producing significant smoke, or blocking your escape route, leave immediately and call 911.

👨‍👩‍👧 Teach Children About Fire Safety

Children should know what a smoke alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one. Teach them to:

  • Get outside quickly.

  • Never hide from firefighters.

  • Never go back inside for toys or belongings.

  • Stay away from matches, lighters, candles, and other fire hazards.

  • Call 911 once they are safely outside.
